Elvis Went to Woodstock
Elvis sighting at the 1969 Woodstock Arts And Music Fair…Wait what? He was still with us then, and this isn’t newsworthy? Well Indie Legends Grunge Tree take us on a fantastic voyage back to the past with a brilliant song-An Elvis sighting from 2023…
Grunge Tree · Elvis Went to Woodstock ·Elvis Went to Woodstock
Grunge Tree are a heck of a band from our indie scene who I’ve recently come to really appreciate (again so very grateful to have been introduced to these legends through Sweet Beets and the wider indie community) - these guys are another outstanding example of the vast range of styles and talents our indie community has within it- Grunge Tree almost embody all the styles they find fun to play-forming in 2007 and truly inspiring us all. This track-“Elvis Went To Woodstock” is a wonderful odyssey back to the age of Aquarius and 1969 with plenty of references to the festival held between August 15 to 18 on a dairy farm in Bethel, New York (95 kms (or 60 miles) southwest from the town of Woodstock…) which was the pinnacle of the hippy movement with some of the greatest artists of the time (and-in my view-of all time…) performing in the mud and rain for 3 days of peace… Grunge Tree uses the intriguing songwriting and storytelling possibility that Elvis may have gone to the Woodstock Arts and Music Fair and which makes for an incredibly entertaining song with a powerful and hypnotic groove along with the perfect amount of good humour, marvellous storytelling and exceptional musicianship that keeps you guessing and definitely enthralled. An awesome and entertaining work from an indie band who keeps on giving to our global community. The Elvis of this piece travels incognito to the festival then passes out just before Jimi Hendrix plays the end of the festival with the Band of Gypsys, and after he parties a little too hard with some of the stars there including Richie Havens, John Sebastian, the Grateful Dead and Joe Cocker to name a few that are mentioned during this track… Yes Elvis may have gone to Woodstock- he WAS known to later work with Richard Nixon as a “special agent” for the illegal narcotics' bureau…targeting such undesirables as The Beatles apparently…so maybe he went undercover-or perhaps this was just a festival Elvis would have dug witnessing or even performing at? We may never know. But it’s an awesome song by Grunge Tree that tends to be a bit of an ear worm-it’s one I find myself humming and singing often.
