Indie legend The Belle Vue Zoo goes straight to your soul with this slice of pure funk and (I know I’ve already mentioned this word, but I’ll say it again with emphasis as dynamic as this song) Soul styled groover which has all the hallmarks of an Insta-Classic written all over it. With a funky acoustic guitar strumming a syncopated groove, solid drum part strutting about, a beautiful weaving bass sound and a vocal which take you wandering through the streets of the protagonist of this song’s youth with a harmonious call and response like vocal part bringing echoes of Stax and Motown…you’re reeled right in. The instant this song worked its magic into these ears there was a feeling this was a track which deserves recognition. Here it is. Almost wistful and somber lyrical themes juxtapose with the unmistakable groove of this piece, a mini epic and a brilliant piece of songwriting. Something to be expected from this brilliant artist.
