About
Rob Christman’s musical journey began early. At just five years old, he picked up the acoustic guitar under the guidance of his father, a skilled jazz musician who provided his foundational training. But everything changed when Rob heard Jimi Hendrix perform “Johnny B. Goode” on Hendrix in the West. That electrifying moment ignited a lifelong passion for the electric guitar.
Rob went on to formally study music theory, percussion and rhythm studies, classical and contemporary composition, and instrument-independent music theory through both collegiate education and intensive personal study. A true multi-instrumentalist, Rob is self-taught on guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin, violin, piano, and clarinet. He continues to expand his expertise in sight-reading, recording, engineering, music production, and is also an accomplished guitar luthier.
From 1972–1980, Rob’s father remained a powerful influence through both recorded sessions and live performances. Additional inspirations include David Gilmour, Eddie Van Halen, and classical masters such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Hector Berlioz. His stylistic foundation spans Classical, Jazz, Blues, Progressive Rock, New Age, and World Music.
Rob began playing in bands at age 11, performing live by 12, and composing and recording by 14. Between 1982 and 1994, he formed and led six bands—Ice, Alpha, Wired, XL, Leviathan, Geneva, and Black Essox—touring extensively throughout the Midwest United States and performing in venues of every size. From 1983 to 1986, he also worked in orchestral pit crews for three years. Since 1994, Rob has focused primarily on his solo career, composing and recording original material while also engineering and running sound for numerous theatrical productions.
Rob earned Top 40 honors eight times on OurStage for his instrumental single “Boundless” and for his collaborative single “Whisper Away.” As a solo artist, he has worn virtually every creative and technical hat since 1994, bringing a vast range of skill, depth, and experience to every project.
He also served as the main composer for the indie rock band Reign of Fire featuring hits such as Desert Caravan, Voices, and Call of Vikings! During one of their extended writing and recording sessions, Rob made the decision to launch his own self-titled project:
