The JR Band

The JR Band traces its roots to a long-running Mid-Michigan bluegrass jam band that met weekly at Brewtopia Coffee House in Bay City, Michigan. For years, John Timko and Randy Juhl played alongside a core group of musicians and invited guests, building friendships and a shared love of acoustic music. A seasoned songwriter with a BMI catalog dating back to his early days playing in Nashville, John brought a lifetime of original songs and stories to the group, while Randy contributed years of experience performing with several local bands throughout Mid-Michigan. When new ownership temporarily closed Brewtopia, the musicians scattered in search of new places to play, and the original group eventually went its separate ways. Inspired to continue making music together, John and Randy launched their own project. They spent the next couple of years performing as an acoustic duo at VNO's, a Bay City wine bar and restaurant, often playing simply for a meal and the opportunity to perform. Armed with little more than two guitars and no sound system, they played through countless songs, gradually refining their sound and eventually investing in professional equipment. The project later expanded into JR Band & Friends, welcoming Bob Rostollan and Kelly Sible and blending fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, and upright bass into a rich acoustic sound rooted in folk, bluegrass, Americana, and country. Known for heartfelt storytelling, close harmonies, and an easy, down-home spirit, The JR Band combines original songs with traditional influences that connect with audiences of all ages. Produced at Randy Juhl's Heart Street Studio, the band performs everywhere from coffeehouses and listening rooms to pubs, festivals, and community events, with their music reaching listeners on radio and streaming platforms across Michigan and around the world.
